Symphony Orchestra Audition Requirements
Symphony Orchestra is our advanced, flagship orchestra encompassing strings, winds, and percussion. Students in Symphony Orchestra play at the highest level of all our ensembles. Students develop advanced instrumental, ensemble, and musical techniques and continue to grow through the musical resources. Members of the Symphony Orchestra are expected to learn and prepare extremely advanced levels of music. This ensemble performs orchestra music from grade 5+ and/or the AS/AF level of the Florida Orchestra Association MPA List. Once accepted into this ensemble, students must maintain high levels of participation and preparation to remain an ensemble member. Acceptance into Symphony is contingent upon student audition and balance of the ensemble.
The 2024-2025 Season Symphony Orchestra audition is the last movement of Brahms Symphony No. 1. Students must prepare the entire last movement (Adagio, Piu Andante, Allegro Non Troppo). Students will be asked to perform excerpts from the movement at their live audition along with scales with arpeggios and sight reading.

Violin 1: Only returning Violin 1 Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Violin 1 part along with three-octave memorized scales in the following keys: G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb, F, a, d, and g
Violin 2: All new students and returning second violin Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Violin 2 part along with three octave scales with arpeggios in the keys of: C, G, D, A and two octave scales with arpeggios in the keys of E, F, Bb, Eb and Ab. All students auditioning on the Violin 2 part will be considered for Violin 1 or Violin 2 placement.
Viola: All new students and returning viola Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Viola part along with three octave scales with arpeggios in the keys of: C, G, D, A and two octave scales with arpeggios in the keys of E, F, Bb, Eb and Ab.
Cello: All new students and returning cello Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Cello part along with three octave scales with arpeggios in the keys of C, G, D, F and two octave scales with arpeggios in the keys of A, E, F, Bb, Eb and Ab.
Bass: All new students and returning bass Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Bass part along with two octave scales with arpeggios in the keys of E, F, G, A, Bb, and C with no displacements and one octave scales with arpeggios in the keys of
D, Eb and Ab.
Flute: All new students and returning flute Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Flute1 part along with the 9/10 Florida All-State scales.
Clarinet: All new students and returning clarinet Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Clarinet 1 part along with the 9/10 Florida All-State scales.
Bassoon: All new students and returning bassoon Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Bassoon1 part along with the 9/10 Florida All-State scales.
French Horn: All new students and returning french horn Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the French Horn 1 part along with the 9/10 Florida All-State scales.
Trumpet: All new students and returning trumpet Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Trumpet 1 part along with the 9/10 Florida All-State scales.
Trombone: All new students and returning trombone Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Trombone 1 part along with the 9/10 Florida All-State scales.
Tuba and Bass Trombone: All new students and returning bass trombone and tuba Symphony Orchestra students should prepare the Tuba part along with the 9/10 Florida All-State scales.
