String Ensembles

Young Mozarts

This is the introductory string ensemble of GMYS where students who already have basic proficiency on their instrument start to learn  ensemble skills like following a conductor, playing distinct parts in collaboration with other sections, and ensemble musicianship. This ensemble performs orchestra music from grade 0.5-1, and/or the ES level of the Florida Orchestra Association MPA List. Students are expected to stay in this orchestra 1-2 seasons.

Rehearsal Location: University of Miami Frost School of Music, Broby Hall
Rehearsal Day: Sunday
Rehearsal Time: 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Audition Criteria for Young Mozarts Orchestra are:
D Major Scale one octave – all instruments
Violin/Viola/Cello: Suzuki any piece before Minuet 2 in Suzuki Book 1 or any exercise after #74 in Essential Elements Book 1
Bass any piece before French Folk Song in Suzuki book 1 or any exercise after #74 in Essential Elements Book 1
Sight reading – grade 1 (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)who 

String Orchestra

This is the advanced beginning string ensemble of GMYS where students continue to develop their ensemble and musicianship skills. This ensemble performs orchestra music from grade 1.5-2.5, and/or the DS level of the Florida Orchestra Association MPA List. Students are expected to stay in this orchestra 1-2 seasons.

Rehearsal Location: University of Miami Frost School of Music, Broby Hall
Rehearsal Day: Sunday
Rehearsal Time: 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Audition Criteria for String Orchestra are:

Violin 1 Audition:

G Major scale and arpeggio two octaves
Gavotte by Gossec from Suzuki book 2
Grade 2 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Violin 2 Audition:

G Major scale and arpeggio two octaves
Minuet 2 by Bach from Suzuki book 1
Grade 2 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Viola Audition:

C Major scale and arpeggio two octaves
Minuet 2 by Bach from Suzuki book 1
Grade 2 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Cello Audition:

C Major scale and arpeggio two octaves
Minuet 2 by Bach from Suzuki book 1
Grade 2 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Bass Audition:

C Major one octave scale and arpeggio
French Folk Song from Suzuki book 1
Grade 2 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Concert Orchestra

This is the intermediate string ensemble of GMYS. This ensemble performs orchestra music from grade 3-4 and/or the CS level of the Florida Orchestra Association MPA List. Acceptance into Serenade is contingent upon student audition and balance of the ensemble. Students are expected to stay in this orchestra 1-2 seasons.

Rehearsal Location: University of Miami Frost School of Music, Nancy Greene Hall
Rehearsal Day: Sunday
Rehearsal Time: 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Audition Criteria for Concert Orchestra:

Violin 1:
C Major two octave scale and arpeggio in third position
Bourree by Bach with shifting from Suzuki book 3
Grade 3.5 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Violin 2:
C Major two octave scale and arpeggio in first position
Minuet by Boccherini from Suzuki book 2
Grade 3 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Viola:
F Major two octave scale and arpeggio in first or third position
Minuet by Boccherini from Suzuki book 2
Grade 3 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Cello:
F Major two octave scale and arpeggio
Two Grenadiers from Suzuki book 2
Grade 3 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Bass:
G major scale and arpeggio – one octave
Etude from Suzuki book 2
Grade 3 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Overture Orchestra

This is the intermediate/advanced string/full orchestra ensemble of Greater Miami Youth Symphony. This ensemble performs string and full orchestra music from grade 4-5 and/or the BS, CF, and BF levels of the Florida Orchestra Association MPA List. Acceptance into Overture Orchestra is contingent upon student audition and balance of the ensemble. Students are expected to stay in this orchestra 1-2 seasons.

Rehearsal Day: Sunday
Rehearsal Time: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Audition Criteria for Overture Orchestra:

Violin 1:
F Major two octave scale and arpeggio with shifting
Concert in G minor by Vivaldi first movement from Suzuki book 5
Grade 4.5 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Violin 2:
D Major two octave scale and arpeggio with shifting
Concert in A minor by Vivaldi first movement from Suzuki book 4
Grade 4 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Viola:
G Major two octave scale and arpeggio with shifting
Concert in D minor by Vivaldi first movement from Suzuki book 4
Grade 4 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Cello:
G Major two octave scale and arpeggio with shifting
Adagio and Allegro by Marcello from Suzuki book 4
Grade 4 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Bass:
F Major one octave scale and arpeggio
Gavotte by Gossec from Suzuki book 3
Grade 4 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion:
2 octave scale of your choice
Perform a solo from the FBA list, grade 3 or higher
Grade 4 sight reading passage (excerpt from Sightreading Factory will be used)

Symphony Orchestra

Conductor: Huifang Chen

This is the premier orchestral ensemble of Greater Miami Youth Symphony. This ensemble performs orchestra music from grade 5+ and/or the AS/AF level of the Florida Orchestra Association MPA List. Once accepted into this ensemble, students must maintain high levels of participation and preparation to remain an ensemble member. Acceptance into Symphony is contingent upon student audition and balance of the ensemble.
