Beginning Classes
Strings and Band
Beginning Strings
Students must have completed Kindergarten and be at least 5 years old to participate.
String instruments taught in these classes include: Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass
Violin/Viola classes will be held at the GMYS location: 11656 North Kendall Drive
Class Days/Times: Saturdays at 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Saturdays at 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Cello/Bass classes will be held at University of Miami
Class Days/Times: Sundays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m
It is recommended that Level 1 Starter String students, and students who have not yet completed third grade, attend class with a parent.
Starter Strings: This is for students with no previous experience on their instrument.
Upon successful completion of this class students should be able to demonstrate:
- Appropriate rest position
- Appropriate playing position
- Correct identification for parts of the bow and instrument
- Correct string orientation and identification of open string on the music staff
- Basic pitch matching
- Basic coordination and rhythm skills
- Basic bow hold and pull
- Appropriate left hand position and finger placement
- Ability to perform Twinkle Variations A-E
- Ability to perform the Monkey Song
- Ability to perform Essential Elements Book 1 exercises 2-20
- Ability to perform a D Major, one octave scale
Stretching Strings: This is for students who have successfully completed Starter Strings.
Upon successful completion of this class students should be able to demonstrate all Starter Strings proficiencies as well as demonstrate:
- Correct identification of a one-octave D Major scale on the music staff
- Correct performance of notes in a one-octave D Major scale on the instrument in sequence and radom orders
- Appropriate pitch matching of 3-6 note patterns
- Appropriate coordination and rhythm skills
- Basic bow hold and pull
- Appropriate left hand position and finger placement
- Ability to perform Twinkle Variation Rhythms A-E
- Ability to perform Lightly Row and French Folk Song
- Ability to perform Essential Elements Book 1 exercises 2-35
- Ability to perform a D Major and G Major one octave scales
Soaring Strings: This is for students who have successfully completed Stretching Strings.
Upon successful completion of this class students should be able to demonstrate all Soaring Strings proficiencies as well as demonstrate:
- Correct identification of notes of the G, D, and A strings on the music staff
- Correct performance of notes on the G, D, and A strings on the instrument in sacle patterns and radom order
- Appropriate pitch matching of 3-6 note patterns
- Appropriate coordination and rhythm skills
- Intermediate bow hold and pull
- Appropriate left hand position and finger placement
- Ability to perform Go Tell Aunt Rhody, Christopher’s Tune, Matthew’s March, Buckeye Salute, and Allegro
- Ability to perform a D, G and C Major one octave scales
Spectacular Strings: This is for students who have successfully completed Soaring Strings.
Upon successful completion of this class students should be able to demonstrate all Soaring Strings proficiencies as well as demonstrate:
- Correct identification of notes of the G, D, A, and C or E strings on the music staff
- Correct performance of notes on the G, D, A, and C or E strings on the instrument in sacle patterns and radom order
- Appropriate pitch matching of 3-6 note patterns
- Appropriate coordination and rhythm skills
- Consistent correct bow hold and pull
- Consistent correct left hand position and finger placement
- Ability to perform Allegretto, Andantino, Ode to Joy, Can Can, and Etude
- Ability to perform a D, G and C Major one octave scales with arpeggios
Upon the successful completion of our Spectacular Strings class, students should be ready to pass the Young Mozarts audition!
